The septic tank is an extremely tried and trusted way of dealing with waste. It pre-dates modern sewerage systems by many hundreds of years.

As these systems mainly take waste away to be processed somewhere else, they could be argued to be inefficient. Septic tanks do the job on site, safely and efficiently.

They have to be installed correctly, of course, and this is not possible for every situation.

As well as this, they must be maintained properly to pass state and local laws. As providers of septic tank services Toowoomba relies on, we make sure this is done to the highest standards.

Waste Processing

The term “tank” is misleading when it comes to septic tanks. This probably conjures up an image of a large vessel which gets filled with… stuff. That’s not what happens, and a septic tank is actually quite complicated.

Probably a better description would be a septic system rather than tank.

The two types of septic system are leech drain and soak water. In either case, the system will have two of each; leech drains or soak waters. This allows one of the units to dry out while the other is in use. Changing from one to the other is done by means of a diverter box.

By the time the leech drains or soak waters come into play, solid material has already been separated out. This is done in waterproof, cylindrical tanks, which are the first stage of the process.

As the solid material is heavier than water, it sinks to the bottom as sludge. Oil and fat then form a crust on top of the sludge. The resulting fluid above these is called effluent. It is this which is further processed, by leeching into the surrounding soil.

Working Parts

As part of the septic tank services Toowoomba residents and businesses use, maintenance is therefore essential. Septic systems have to be installed away from road traffic, other properties and above water tables.

They also have to be far enough away from bores and creeks, to avoid these becoming polluted.

These installation restrictions are enhanced by continued maintenance rules. Sludge build-up is the main cause of the failure of septic systems.

As a rule of thumb, a two person household should have their septic system de-sludged every eight years. For twin tank systems, the diverter should be employed once a year.

Carrying out de-sludging can only be done by licensed professionals. Blockages and technical problems can result if a maintenance regime is not carried out correctly. This could result in septic systems being condemned and possibly removed by the local authority.

Water is a precious resource, and the average modern home or business uses a lot of it. Not only that, these homes and businesses also produce a lot of waste water.

By professionally dealing with waste water, many of the things people use water for can be done by recycling. This saves on water bills, and cuts down on the demands put on the natural water supply.

Modern treatment systems are becoming more popular across Queensland, benefiting thousands of families and business operators. The wastewater Toowoomba produces is today becoming a useful resource you can make use of.

Safe Process

The most important thing to remember when processing your own waste water is that the system is safe. You’re not trying to re-make your own drinking water, just water that can be used safely elsewhere.

This essentially means you can water your garden effectively and efficiently, rather than your waste disappearing down a sewer. The cost savings of doing it this way are significant.

There are no moving parts in the early stages of the recycling process. Anaerobic digestion allows pollutants to break down naturally, then be separated off from the water.

Once this has happened, the separated material is processed by bacteria in the aeration chamber. These bacteria break down most of the waste material by means of a bio-filter.

The next stage of the process is the sedimentation chamber. This allows undigested material to separate out from the water. Some will sink to the bottom, some float to the top. The resulting clear water is then transferred to a pump out chamber.

From there, it’s pumped through a disinfection unit. This treats the water with chlorine, making it safe to be used in the garden.

Efficient Use

This use of wastewater Toowoomba homes and businesses create is simple and effective. All the water from bathrooms, kitchens and toilets goes directly into the processor.

Plumbing the system in is relatively simple, once permission has been obtained. Secondary advanced wastewater systems are fully approved by the Queensland state government.

Apart from the pump at the final stage of the process, these systems have no working parts. This means they are extremely easy to maintain, as there’s nothing to go wrong with them. There are, however, audible and visible alarms attached to the fixtures, in case of any problems.

All the processing tanks are contained within a single unit, meaning it’s very easy to install. Gravity and other natural processes take care of the rest, giving superbly efficient use of all waste water.

Inspect and Pump Frequently

The normal family septic framework ought to be assessed at regular intervals by a septic administration professional. Family septic tanks in Dalby are commonly siphoned each three to five years.

Elective frameworks with electrical buoy switches, siphons, or mechanical parts ought to be assessed all the more regularly like household size, total wastewater generated, the volume of solids in wastewater, septic tank size.

Service provider

When you call a septic specialist organization, the person will investigate for holes and analyze the filth and slop layers in your septic tanks in Dalby. Keep support records on the work performed on your septic framework.

Your septic tank incorporates a T-formed outlet which keeps muck and rubbish from leaving the tank and venturing out to the drain field territory. On the off chance that the base of the rubbish layer is inside six crawls of the base of the outlet, or if the highest point of the ooze layer is inside 12 creeps of the outlet, your tank should be syphoned.

To monitor when to syphon out your tank, record the ooze and filth levels found by the septic expert.

Use Water Efficiently

The majority of water a family unit sends down its funnels ends up in its septic framework. The more water a family rations, the less water enters the septic framework. Effective water use improves the activity of a septic framework and lessens the danger of disappointment.

Washing machines.

Washing small loads of laundry on your washing machine’s large-load cycle wastes water and energy. By selecting the proper load size, you will reduce water waste. If you are unable to select a load size, run only full loads of laundry.

Properly Dispose of Waste

Whether you flush it down the toilet, grind it in the garbage disposal, or pour it down the sink, shower, or bath, everything that goes down your drains ends up in your Septic Tank in Dalby system. What goes down the drain affects how well your septic system works.

Toilets aren’t trash cans!

Your septic framework isn’t a rubbish can. A simple standard guideline: Don’t flush anything other than human waste and bathroom tissue.

Never flush:

Cooking oil or oil

Non-flushable wipes, for example, infant wipes or other moist disposable clothes.

Think at the sink!

Your septic framework contains a gathering of living beings that overview and treat family unit squander. Pouring poisons down your channel can execute these living beings and damage your septic framework. Regardless of whether you are at the kitchen sink, bath, or utility sink:

Avoid substance channel openers for a stopped up channel. Rather, use bubbling water or a channel wind.

Never pour cooking oil or oil down the channel.

Never pour oil-based paints, solvents, or vast volumes of harmful cleaners down the channel. Indeed, even latex paint waste ought to be limited.

The drainfield component of your septic system that removes contaminants from the liquid that emerges from your septic tank is an important part of your septic system.

For more info you can contact 0428 787 462 or visit the following website https://www.pikeswastewater.com.au/

Septic tanks are a popular and practical method of dealing waste in many parts of Queensland. If properly designed and installed, they are perfectly safe, and also environmentally friendly.

Of course, this technology needs to pass some rigorous health and safety standards to gain approval and certification. One of these is appropriate access.

You can install your own septic tank, but it must be open for inspection as required. As experts in septic tanks Toowoomba home and business owners rely on, we help you maintain your tank correctly.

Working Parts

Septic tanks come in two designs, depending on how many people will use them. Although the word “tank” suggests something that just contains things, in fact septic tanks are working pieces of machinery. If installed incorrectly or poorly maintained, they won’t work properly. If this happens, there are some very serious health and safety issues to worry about.

For use by ten people or less, septic tanks come ready-made. They are two large diameter cylinders, connected by a pipe. For more than ten people, septic tanks are rectangular, and have to be made on site.

In both cases, the principles behind their work are the same. Rectangular tanks have a separating wall, or baffle, inside. In either case, the second chamber has to be twice the size of the first.

Maintenance Issues

Septic tanks work by breaking down waste matter using bacteria. This process forms a scum blanket on top, and sludge at the bottom. Effluent is pumped from the second chamber, to be collected in a drain, or lagoon. The sludge has to be removed periodically, as it builds up and affects the breakdown process.

To maintain the septic tanks Toowoomba people use, sump pumps sometimes need replacing. These are the final stage of the process, and are sometimes needed to pump out the effluent. Although gravity usually does this work, sometimes a pump will be needed. Changing conditions around the tank such as a raised soakaway can bring this about.

While septic tanks usually operate perfectly efficiently, you still have to be prepared for the worse. That is why maintenance and inspection are legal requirements. The local authority has to be sure that your system is working properly, to comply with its own standards. As it has the final responsibility of dealing with effluent and sludge, it can close down any system it sees as dangerous.

With sensible maintenance and the right access arrangements, septic tanks are sustainable, permanent waste solutions. Out of sight, out of mind, however, is not an option with these systems. Maintenance schedules must be adhered to.

If you’re buying bottled water, you’re wasting your hard-earned money. On the other hand, a rainwater tank will get you as close to a free lunch as you’re going to get.

When it rains, it pours into your rainwater tank and just like that, your fresh clean drinking water is there for the convenience of you and your family.

Here at Pike’s Waste Water Services, we can make sure you get the perfect rainwater system at your house for your drinking water.

Choosing A Tank

Our rainwater tanks come in a variety of sizes to suit every need. You can be sure they have been thoroughly tested and will be perfectly suited for your drinking water.

Our team can sit down with you to figure out your water usage and help select the right sized tank to suit your needs.

Out With Plastics

The environment does not need more plastic. Our planet has a huge problem with discarded plastic that cannot be discarded or recycled.

We love our oceans and our marine life here in Australia. And, even in countries without our famous beach culture, projects are under way to manage waste disposal and help clean up the sea.

With a rainwater tank of your own, you’ll no longer need to buy more plastic bottles of water.

When it comes to all the thousands of plastic bottles that cannot be recycled and end up finding their way into our seas, you’ll be doing your part in preserving our environment and not disrupting our fragile ecological system.

At the same time, water you would otherwise use from the local water system—somewhere around 100,000 litres of water— will be able to stay where it is.

Looking After Your Catchment

So that your drinking water is as clean and fresh as possible, your roof, drainage pipes and tank should be cleaned periodically.

It takes only a few minutes to make sure there’s no debris or blockages in your guttering and drainpipes. And, here at Pike’s Waste Water Services, we provide scheduled maintenance services to ensure that your tank is clean for drinking quality water.

Plumb It In

To make your life easier, the team at Pike’s can plumb your tank into your home. That way, when you turn on your taps, water you’ve collected at no cost will come through direct from your tank.

Ditch The Bottles

To start saving yourself money, contact us here at Pike’s Waste Water Services. Your rainwater tank will change your life. And, considering the size of the problem with plastic bottles, it won’t just be your life that benefits. It really is good for the planet.

Septic tanks are a safe and sustainable way to deal with your wastewater but there a few things to consider to help maintain the health of your tank.

While you can let things like household cleaners, soap, human waste and toilet paper flow into your septic tank in moderation, there are some things that should never end up there.

Kitchen Waste

Washing up liquid is ok but things like food should be disposed of in the bin. Grease and oil can build up and clog septic tanks so they should be disposed of appropriately.

Solid food waste can interfere with the health of the bacteria and may not properly break down so it will continue decomposing in the tank or drainage field.

Make sure you scrape plates thoroughly and get a plug hole waste catcher to stop large food particles from draining into the tank. If your drain becomes blocked, don’t use caustic cleaners or harsh chemicals to try and unblock it — call a plumber.

Bathroom Waste

When you shower or bath, the use of soaps, shampoos and conditioners should be used only as instructed on the label, excess use can disrupt the proper functioning of septic tanks.

When it comes to the toilet, flushable wipes, sanitary pads, tampons, nappies and condoms are a huge no-no. You should only flush human waste and toilet paper into the septic tank to prevent blockages and build up of solids.

The more solid material makes it through, the more often you will have to pump the tank.

Another little thought about waste product is medication. If one of your family is on antibiotics, their urine could carry the medicine through to the tank and kill the bacteria that usually breaks down your waste.

If you have leftover prescriptions, they should be disposed of in the bin and not flushed.

Other Waste

Laundry

When washing your clothes, try to use eco friendly detergent if possible but standard soaps are fine in moderation too. Try to get a water efficient washing machine if possible as older models tend to uses 50% more water which could overwhelm the system.

Water Softeners

Water softening systems aren’t compatible with septic tanks, they use salt to initiate an ion exchange and the waste overflow then flushes saltwater into the tank. Studies have shown that the brine not only harms the bacteria but also allows more solid material to pass through to the drainage field. Water softeners also tend to flush huge amounts of water through in one go and that can inundate the system.

Burial at Sea

Losing a pet can be traumatic for any family but the tradition of sending fish or small rodents down the toilet to a watery grave can’t be done with septic tanks, opt for a burial in the yard.

If you are interested in septic tanks and maintenance call us on 0428 787 462 for more information.

Rainwater tanks have become a lot more popular since the Australian government brought in water restrictions in the early 00’s and tanks are vital requirements for more remote parts of the country.

In some states, they will even offer you a cash rebate to install a tank.

In a survey about why citizens haven’t opted for rainwater collection systems, the safety of the water quality only counted for one percent of those surveyed.

That being said, there are a few safety concerns you should be aware of.

Here are a few tips for keeping your rainwater tanks in tip top condition:

Water Safety

Rainwater is a free and sustainable way to meet your water needs and on average, it is safe to drink without treatment.

The cleanliness of your tank is the main concern when it comes to water purity so make sure you flush through on initial installation to remove any dirt or residue.

The inlet and overflow holes of your rainwater tanks should be the only openings exposed to the air but they both need a mesh covering to stop insects and debris from getting into the tank.

Harmless sludge will slowly build up at the bottom of your tank so this should be cleared every two to three years and this can be done by fixing an inverted funnel to a siphon hose and slowly moving it over the sludge to pull it up through the pipe.

Alternatively there are companies that can do it for you if you aren’t confident doing it yourself.

If you live in an area that has a lot of industrial activity such as factories, it is advisable to not use rainwater for drinking as there is a higher risk of airborne pollution that could harm the quality of your water.

You should boil your rainwater if people who have immunodeficiencies such as the very old, very young or cancer patients are going to be drinking it.

This is to remove the remote possibility of microbes or other contaminants that may have gotten into the tank.

The Catchment Area or the Roof

You should have a first-flush diverter installed with your rainwater tanks.

These are necessary to make sure dust and debris from the roof doesn’t clog the inlet with first rainfall after a dry period.

If you install new roof tiles after your rainwater tanks are already in place, make sure you divert the first rains away so any residue on the tiles is washed off.

If you don’t do this, the colour and taste of your water could be affected.

Make sure the roof stays free of leaves and twigs so any overhanging branches should be trimmed back and the guttering should be checked and cleaned regularly.

Mesh filters can be installed inside the gutter to further prevent blockage and these should be cleaned fairly frequently too.

If you are interested in rainwater tanks, give us a call on 0428 787 462.
